Alpine Ski Racing ~ A High Definition Video Documentary

Steve Beattie is a video producer in Burlington, Vermont completing "Balance", a high definition video documentary about Alpine Ski Racing. The subject of the two-year documentary project is Sasha Dingle, a 2006 High School graduate who attended Mount Mansfield Winter Academy in Stowe, Vermont. The documentary taping was completed in June 2006.

Sasha Dingle

Sasha Kim Dingle - Pre-Race Inspection - December 2004 - video still by Steve Beattie

Sasha is an athlete, driven to succeed in a very competitive, difficult, yet nearly invisible sport. Steve followed her to most of her races in the '04 -'05 season and all the races in the '05-'06 season and witnessed her physical effort and mental toughness, as she strove to improve. And improve she did. In the complex scoring system that determines seeding, and in turn start order, she lowered her FIS Slalom score by nearly 70 points by the end of the second season, spring of 2006.

At the end of the 2005 season, her first at the Academy, she was awarded the George Tormey Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to: "That student athlete, who in a simple manner goes about pursuing their goals and dreams. They possess a signature smile, a strong work ethic, and a dedication to their sport."

Early in the 2006 season Sasha was awarded the Woody Knight Scholarship, for “That student athlete competing at the J1 or J2 level who displays a passion for not only ski racing, but a love of the sport of skiing and its environs. They show honesty, integrity, and perseverance, are committed to school, and pursue interests outside the realm of ski racing.”

The goals for this documentary include:

  • Presenting at the Banff Film Festival
  • Creating a portrait of a young, student-athlete, during some very critical years in any young person's life
  • Bringing some publicity to a level of the sport that is rarely covered by even local media
  • Educating the public about the "culture" of ski racing, the work ethic and dedication of the athletes, parents, coaches, ski technicians, academy administrators, teachers, etc.
